Character Name: Kyle Broflovski
Series: South Park
Timeline: Post season fifteen.
Canon Resource Link: http://southpark.wikia.com/wiki/Kyle_Broflovski
Character Background: Kyle has lived in the small town of South Park ever since he was born. He has kept the same small group of friends, with a few temporary rotations, since he was a toddler who could barely curse. His father is a lawyer who wants to be a dolphin and his mother is a full time protester of whatever cause catches her eye. His baby brother, Ike, is a genius and was made kindergarten class president despite being capable of saying only a few words.
Kyle is obsessed with stopping Cartman from being Cartman, i.e. from taking advantage of other people, from being racist, from being disgusting, from mocking his religion and from whatever Cartman's nefarious goal of the week is. Occasionally they'll call a truce, but this is typically because Cartman has tricked Kyle by appealing to his fiercely moral nature, and serves to make Kyle even angrier with him a short while later.
He is persuasive and intelligent, capable of taking over FBI investigations and persuading military officials that imaginary characters are real to prevent them bombing Imaginationland. The superhero Mysterion chose him when he was in need of help, since he was the smartest kid in their class. Unlike Cartman, who also demonstrates incredible persuasive abilities and intelligence when it comes to meeting his own ends, Kyle tries to pick the right choice. Instead of letting Mysterion be jailed, he chose to dress up as him and get imprisoned instead.
Kyle is very empathetic, choosing to wreck his own credit history and personal finances in order to fix the economy in South Park and risk his life to save Britney Spears from being sacrificed. He cares about animals, as shown by his determination to free the whale Willzyx and return him to his home on the moon, but he has to form a personal connection to with them first – hence his refusal to join Stan in being vegetarian and becoming an eco-terrorist.
He is easily irritable, refusing to ignore Cartman's frequent teasing and has a tendency to vocalise his many complaints about the world. The fact that he is largely immune to fads is testament to his sense of self and intelligence, but it often results in him feeling left out and resentful. Sometimes, he will try to fit in, but always ends up one step behind or else unable to participate whilst being true to himself. He can also be very stubborn, refusing to help Stan from being ridden out of town unless he voted for his choice of school mascot.
Kyle is repeatedly shown as being quite insecure. In 'The List', he is ranked as the least attractive boy in the class. Despite the questionable veracity of the list, he believes it completely. As a result, he lets himself fall out of contact with his friends, believing his place to be with the ugly kids.
Kyle's hobbies include a range of sports and video games. He's said to be the best basketball player in the school, supported by the boys' frequent games in which he dominates his opponents. However, his dancing leaves a lot to be desired, especially the in the 'keeping in rhythm with everyone else' department. He's also often showing playing a variety games on the 360 with his friends, as well as obsessively playing Farmville and World of Warcraft on his PC. He and Stan were once professional Guitar Hero players, but Kyle was removed from the group by their agent because he got sick too often to practice as much as Stan.
Kyle's ill health has been a running theme on the show. He is diabetic, which might explain his evidently weak immune system, and is more susceptible to illness than his friends. There have been episodes revolving around his kidneys failing, his being home ill and haemorrhoids – quite a lot to go through considering he's only ten years old.
Abilites/Special Powers: Aside from being unusually intelligent and horrendously foul-mouthed, Kyle's a fairly normal ten year old boy. His ability to unfailingly get into new and weird kinds of trouble is a little less normal and is part of the reason he struggles to connect with most of his classmates. He cares about what's right and wrong but can be lead to over-rationalise things in order to justify them.
Third-Person Sample: Kyle had many reasons to hate his surname. Chances were high that it would be misspelt in any correspondence he received, as if the people writing to him thought they could spell his name better than he could. Right now, he hated it because of its place in the alphabet. He didn't like anything that brought him closer to Cartman. Not only did Cartman follow him in the register, which would be hell when he got to high school and had to sit in alphabetical sleeping plans, but now Garrison had decided their latest project would be paired, with him picking their partners from their respective positions on the register.
Kyle had been rocking perfect grades all semester and, if he kept it up, his parents were going to finally upgrade their internet connection. This project was graded assuming that both parties would have worked on it and Garrison was expecting to see evidence of this level of effort. The two statements were almost in as much conflict as Kyle and Cartman, who had very different levels of the amount of work that they ought to put into it. Cartman had printed an excerpt from Wikipedia, not even bothered to remove the footnote numbers or the “citation needed” comments dotted throughout, and declared himself done with the project.
He had six days to crack this conundrum. It had been a week-long assignment, but he'd spent the first day thinking up all the reasons why he shouldn't be paired with Cartman and presented his well-reasoned arguments to Mr Garrison, who told Kyle that if he kept whining he'd get his period. (Kyle had, of course, brought up causation and correlation, and also reminded his teacher that he was a ten year old boy, but it hadn't done any good.)
So now he was working on his project. It was uninspiring and completely devoid of any relevance to his life. Every kid thought that about every school project, but Kyle nevertheless felt justified in thinking it. It was unfair, the world was against him, and he had lead a perfectly happy existence without needing to know what Garrison's current favourite on Project Runway felt about leopard print this season.
First-Person Sample: [Kyle's eyes dart from side to side. He's shivering, despite being well-padded in a thick winter coat.]
Where am I?
[Not expecting an answer, he gingerly steps around the room until the flickering light of the camera catches his eye. He inches closer, curious, and suddenly the fear is ripped from his face to be replaced by rage. He's realised that someone's filming and therefore someone has to be watching. Watching him suffer. Now who does that remind him of?]
What the fuck? Cartman, if you're behind this, I'll get your ass banned from Shakey's for life!
